Exhaustion

I wasn't going to choose this picture at first, but then I realized how this guy looks disturbingly like my dad. Since part of this post is about my dad, I figured it will work.

So, I'm officially tired.

The birthday party prep and actual birthday celebration took me almost a full week. It was very tiring, but worth the smile on Pirate Munchkin's face. She had a blast with everything and felt very spoiled this year. I just hope she doesn't expect this much next year because that's just not gonna happen.

Right as I was starting the birthday prep, my dad called and asked me for a favor. He's a musician, and was going to be playing for a big benefit dinner/dance. He had picked up a tuxedo jacket and pants for this thing, but he wanted a really nice vest to go with it. We went to the fabric store, found some gorgeous fabric and a pattern. The pattern wasn't quite what he wanted, so I knew it would take some adjusting.

With all the birthday stuff, I wasn't able to start the vest until the day before the benefit. It took me a grand total of FIFTEEN hours to make - all in the one day! It turned out beautiful, but it was a rough day. I was not the most patient person to be around last Thursday.

But I did get a great compliment. One of his friends saw the vest and said that I'm an "extremely talented seamstress."

Then, we had some interesting updates on Surfer Pirate's health. He's had some things going on, and we were finally able to figure out what it was (thanks for your help B!). It's great to know what's going on and what they can do to treat it (don't worry, it's nothing too serious), but dealing with doctors appointments and getting medication and getting on the very long waiting list for a specialist has been pretty draining.

In between all this, Pirate Munchkin has ended up at the hospital 3 times over the last three weeks. She and Surfer Pirate were rough-housing, and she got her toe caught under a door. It bled quite a bit, but I figured it was just a cut. A few days later, I realized it was still bleeding, so I had her soak it for a while in the tub and I took a good look at it. The nail was lifted. We got her in to see her pediatrician who told us to just keep an eye on it and let it grow out on its own. Our sweet doctor lives in our neighborhood, so she was nice enough to check in a few days later. She advised me to go ahead and start clipping it back slowly - keeping it just just shorter than the end of the toe. I did. Then, the next week (same day as the big party), I got a call from the school nurse. At recess, she had run into another kid's shoe, and now her toenail was standing straight up. Doctor's Visit #2 was in the ER. After weighing out our options, the decision was made to glue the toenail down - to protect the nail bed. Sadly, the glue didn't hold very well, so I've kept it down with medical tape ever since. Then, this Wednesday, Pirate Munchkin and her friend were playing in my truck (which was a big no, no since they didn't have my approval, but I figured I would deal with the punishment once the friend had gone home). The friend's grandfather arrived, mass excitement ensued, and next thing I knew, my little girl had fallen face-first off the driver's seat of the truck onto the driveway. Off we went to the ER again. The nose, front teeth and right hand took the most force. No fingers are broken, her front 2 teeth were already loose, so now they just got a little head-start (still haven't fallen out, amazingly!), and it's still a little too soon to see if her nose is broken. We're supposed to watch it for a week until the swelling is all the way down. At that point, if it's crooked, we can either have it straightened (OW!), or just leave it since it's really just a cosmetic issue. We're also supposed to watch for 3 weeks to make sure she can breathe through it ok - continuing congestion could mean internal damage. The good news is as the swelling has gone down over the last couple days, the nose looks pretty straight. The initial congestion already seems to have stopped. So she may have gotten through this one just fine. (And without a scratch on her glasses! Wow!) But Mom is pretty darn tired of hospital waiting rooms!

All this drama means my house has pretty much looked like a tornado hit it. Laundry got pretty piled up, and I'm doing what I can to catch up. But I'm exhausted, and the weather outside is gloomy and nasty. My house feels drafty today, and I'm cold enough to start thinking one of those Snuggy things in the commercials sounds like a good idea. I must be delirious!

Just for Fun

I discovered this really fun website today. On it, I found the top 100 songs from the year I graduated from high school.

I have pretty mixed feelings about the music when I was in high school. For the most part, I remember hating the music from the year I graduated. But now here it is, the official list of the most popular stuff from that year!

I had flashbacks just reading the list!

So I think I need to do a music review:

1. All I Wanna Do - Sheryl Crow I really don't like Sheryl Crow. At all. And I especially hate this song. Blech!
2. I'll Make Love To You - Boys II MenBoys II Men Ahh, Boys II Men. I always loved them. I don't think there's a song of theirs I don't like. Lots of good memories.
3. Turn The Beat Around - Gloria Estefan I would swear this song is older than that! But yes, I liked this song.
4. I Like To Move It - Reel 2 RealReel 2 Real I really don't remember this song from back then, but I love it now - and Pirate Munchkin loves it even more than me, thanks to Madagascar.
5. I Swear - John Michael MontgomeryMichael Montgomery (or All-4-One) Love, love, love, love this song! I have both versions on CD.
6. Bootie CallBootie Call - BLACKstreet Don't remember this one. I checked it out on youtube. Yeah, I'm glad I don't remember it.
7. Circle Of Life - Elton John Loved the movie, not so big on Disney movie songs being played on the radio, though.
8. On Bended Knee - Boys II Men See #2
9. The Sign - Ace of Base This is one of the flashback songs. I have LOTS of memories tied to this song. I think I wore out the CD.
10. Always - Bon Jovi Had to look this one up. Meh. It was alright.
11. Crazy - AerosmithCrazy - Aerosmith Loved the song, loved the video even more, and now it's stuck in my head.
12. Can You Feel The Love Tonight - Elton John See #7
13. Action - Terror Fabulous Even after looking this one up, I don't think I've ever heard it.
14. 100% Pure Love100% Pure Love - Crystal Waters I remember liking this one a lot the first couple times. Then it was over-played and I got sick of it. I'm listening to it right now, and it's pretty darn fun.
15. At Your Best (You Are Love) - Aaliyah Had to look this one up too. I had forgotten about this song. Awesome song!
16. Beautiful In My Eyes - Joshua KadisonJoshua Kadisond Didn't remember this one. Thought to myself "sounds cheesy". Looked it up. Yep. I was right. It was cheesy.
17. Mr VainMr Vain - Culture Beat I could take or leave this one. It was part of the whole club-mix, big-base dance beat that was so popular. Not my favorite, but I could tolerate it.
18. Power Of Love - Celene DionCelene Dion Good memory here. I loved this song so much I used to belt it out whenever I heard it. I even sang it to some guy I was dancing with at a church dance. He was impressed (or maybe he was scared and was afraid if he said he didn't like it I would hurt him!)
19. Mr Jones - Counting Crows A little over-played, but still a fun song. And yes, I still remember all the words.
20. Whatta ManWhatta Man - Salt N Pepa I could listen to this song pretty much every day and not get sick of it! This is the first one of the songs on this list that I had to just sit back and watch the whole video. It's been too long!
21. Another Night - Real McCoyReal McCoy See #14
22. Endless Love - Mariah Carey & Luthor VandrossLuthor Vandross GAG!!!
23. All Apolgies - Nirvana I hated Nirvana in high school. With a passion. Now, I appreciate them (it helps that Surfer Pirate loves their music). I wouldn't say I love this one, but it's not bad.
24. Here Comes The HotstepperHere Comes The Hotstepper - Ini KamozeIni Kamoze I'm chair dancing here!! I still love this song. I'm thinking I may have to burn a CD of songs like this that I miss from high school!
25. All For Love - Bryan Adams, Sting, Rod Stewart Great song... but Rod Stewart is creepy... not just in this video... just all the time.
26. Prayer For The DyingPrayer For The Dying - Seal I never had much patience for Seal. Meh.
27. Bump 'N GrindBump 'N Grind - R. Kelly Flashback to Senior Prom. My date was HOT! And he could sing! And he drove a GREAT car. And we danced to this song. And now I think I need a cold shower.
28. All I Want Is You - U2 Blech blech and double blech
29. Return To Innocence - Enigma I love this song. No, I adore this song. To best be appreciated, this song must be played at full volume and with your eyes closed. It does remind me of a former-friend who I hope to never have to see again, but I don't hold that against Enigma.
30. Back and Forth - Aaliyah Great song. Aaliyah was amazing. Wish we hadn't lost her so young. I had to listen to the whole song just now.

38. Regulate - Warren G & Nate Dogg Don't remember it from back then, but I kind of like it now, although the background music reminds me of the music a local furniture store had in their commercials.
39. Wild Night - John Melloncamp & Me'Shell NdegeOcelloMe'Shell NdegeOcello Blech. My ex used to call him John Mellon Head. Yeah, that's about it.
40. Don't Turn AroundDon't Turn Around - Ace of Base I cried my way through this song many a time. One of the theme songs to the first time my heart was broken.
41. Love Is All Around - Wet Wet Wet Great song. Hot lead singer (I love a man with a ponytail!). Does it get any better?
42. Having A Party - Rod Stewart & Ronnie WoodRonnie Wood As I said before, Rod Stewart? Creepy. Maybe if someone else had done the song, I might have given it a chance.
43. Basket Case - GreenCase - Green Day I didn't really appreciate this song back then. Now? LOOOOVE it!!
44. Anytime You Need A FriendAnytime You Need A Friend - Mariah Carey I hate Mariah Carey. Intensely. A lot, a lot, a lot.

52. Possession - Sarah McKachlan Don't remember it, and I think I just fell asleep listening to it.
53. Baby I Love Your WayLove Your Way - Big Mountain I love this version of this song. It makes me happy.
54. Living In DangerLiving In Danger - Ace Of Base See #9. But this one wasn't the best on the CD.
55. Stay (I Missed You) - Lisa LoebLisa Loeb & Nine StoriesNine Stories I hate this song. It makes me want to gouge my eyes out and burn my ears off.
56. Without You - Mariah Carey See #44
57. I'll Stand By You - Pretenders No, not so much
58. Undone - The Sweater SongUndone - The Sweater Song - Weezer Annoying and dumb, but my friends Mike and Chris liked it (also mentioned in #47)
59. Long View - Green Day I had a hard time trying to decide if I liked Green Day or not back then. But this was one of the ones I dug.
60 Low - Cracker This one is pretty popular where we like to do karaoke. I don't think I'd ever heard it until we started going there a couple years ago.
61. Black Hole SunBlack Hole Sun - Soundgarden Good song, weird video, but I was really sad that the lead singer had cut his hair.
62. Lucky One - Amy Grant I had to be in the right mood. One day I liked it, the next it was too sappy

67. This DJThis DJ - Warren G Eh. Never been big on songs where they talk about themselves.
68. Closer - Nine Inch NailsCloser - Nine Inch Nails NIN will always remind me of driving around with my friends Molly and 'Manda in Molly's little black hatch-back. This song wasn't on the (tape) we listened to all the time, but it will always remind me of them - and 'Manda's dolfin tattoo that we joked would look like a whale when she got pregnant.
69. I'll Remember - Madonna Even a few seconds of this song makes me want to put a bullet in my brain.
70. So MUch In Love - All-4-OneAll-4-One See #2. Boys II Men and All 4 One are in the same book in my mind. They can pretty much do no wrong.
71. About A Girl - Nirvana See #23
72. Today - Smashing Pumpkins Smashing Pumpkins was a pretty fun group

76. Come Out and Play - The Offspring Love love love love this song! I used to play this at top volume when I was mad at my roommates in college. I still love to listen to this song.
77. Lucas With The Lid OffLucas With The Lid Off - Lucas I had forgotten this one, too! Fun song!
78. Indian OutlawIndian Outlaw - Tim McGraw I can never hear this song without thinking of driving around with my friend Bob in his white hatch-back (I think all my friends had hatch-backs!) I still listen to this one. Love you Bob!!
79. Practice What You Preach - Barry White I don't remember this one, but Barry is always awesome
80. Sweet JaneSweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies Bored me back then. Still does.
81. Keep Ya Head Up - 2Pac Didn't care for him back then. (And hey! He was still alive back then so him releasing new albums wasn't such a weird thing!) Now I like him, but this song still doesn't do anything for me.
82. Because The Night - 10,000 Maniacs Kill me now. Please don't make me listen to this song again.
83. Interstate Love SongInterstate Love Song - Stone TempleStone Temple Pilots Song still doesn't do much for me. But his voice does remind me of Surfer Pirate's voice.
84. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm - Crash Test DummiesCrash Test Dummies This one is the one that made me want to blog about this. I laughed hysterically when I read this on the list!! The previously mentioned Mike and Chris knew how much I hated this song, so they would torture me by singing it to me. Every. Single. Day. It's still a stupid song. But I may have to go listen to it just once - for old time's sake.
85. Said I Loved You... But I Lied - Michael Bolton No. I refuse to go there.
86. Dunkie Butt - 12 Guage Yeah, there's 15 seconds of my life I'll never get back. Really glad I didn't know about that song back then.

91. Fade Into You - Mazzy StarMazzy Star Zzzzzzzzz (then and now)
92. Streets of PhiladelphiaStreets of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen Normally, I can't stand him. But I kind of liked this song - but I did have a thing for a guy from Philly back then. That could explain it.
93. Breathe Again - Toni Braxton Another theme song from my first broken heart. Lots of Toni Braxton songs made me cry in those days.
94. Cannonball - The Breeders Meh.
95. Round Here - Counting Crows Yep. I would still rather stick ice picks under my fingernails than listen to this song.
96. Leaving Las VegasLeaving Las Vegas - Sheryl Crow No, no, no, no, no, no... (See #1)
97. Spin The Bottle - Juliana HatfieldJuliana Hatfield I always skipped over this one on the Reality Bites soundtrack. I hate when people think it's clever to rhyme 15 words in a row.
98. Bizarre Love Triangle - Frente! Eeeeeeeeeew
99. Why Haven't I Heard From You - Reba McEntire Ah, back in the days when I actually LIKED Reba! Not a bad song.
100. Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon - Urge Overkill Yeah, don't need THAT one in my head now. Gag, gag, gag.

That was fun, but it took MUCH longer than I thought it would. I hope you enjoyed my little trip down memory lane.

Now I have to go listen to some Aaliah to get some of those last songs out of my head!

*I'm not really sure why some of these are blue. They're probably linked to something. Click on them if you dare! :)

Delicate Little Butterflies

Look! Little butterflies have fluttered down and landed oh-so-delicately on top of my cupcakes!

Now the trick is to transport them to the party without them being completely destroyed!

Adventures in Baking

One day I will attempt one of these topsy-turvy cakes. They're very cool. But after this week, that will be a looooong time from now.

Pirate Munchkin's 6th birthday is tomorrow.

Considering some previous birthday cake disasters, I thought "cupcakes will be easy. We'll do cupcakes this year."

But no boring cake and frosting for me.

Oh no. That would be too easy.

So I pulled out this lovely book that my mother sent me for Christmas. She told me that she bought it for me just to have something fun to look at. But can I just look at it? Noooooo. I have to actually use the ideas! (Someone should probably stop me.)

Armed with post-it notes, Pirate Munchkin and I went through the book, sticking little yellow pieces of paper on the pages we liked. And what we settled on was... {drumroll, please} ... BUTTERFLIES!!!

(If you're asking yourself "Why is she doing butterflies and not something more pirate-like?" The answer is, because it's HER birthday, not mine! I'm seriously considering making a 3D pirate ship for my next birthday.)

I had images of a lovely tower (thanks to the Wilton's Cupcakes N More stand) of beautiful butterflies - looking like they've just fluttered down and landed ever so gently on the cupcakes.

And then we reserved the place where we were going to have the party. (C'mon people! I'm smart enough not to have a houseful of kids!) They charge by the time, not by how many kids are there. So I figured, since it's her first real birthday party, why not let her have a large group of kids? Twenty kids, and who knows how many adults mean THREE DOZEN cupcakes. Yikes!

That's a LOT of hand-made butterflies!

Now, I certainly never dreamed that 37 pairs (the extra pair is because I can't count) of butterfly wings would take FIVE HOURS to make!

If I had, I think I would have re-thought that whole "let her invite as many kids as she wants" thing.

But I'm happy to report, the cupcakes are done, and they turned out as beautifully as I hoped. I'll post pictures shortly.

I have 143 movies on this list. (Keep in mind, she did this posting in 2006, so some of these movies have more sequels.) So, according to whoever said if you've seen more than 105 of these, you have no life, I'm a big fat loser.

But my opinion on it? I have a life, and it revolves around watching lots and lots of movies!

My dad has always been known for being able to find a song quote for almost any occasion. I do the same thing - only with movie quotes.

Again

I seriously have an addiction. Someone should probably stop me.

Any guesses where this one came from?

Alphabet

Accent: I don't really think I have one, but I do have a tendency to get a little twangy on the word "Montana" when out-of-staters ask me where I'm from.

Booze: Blech!

Chore I Hate: Cleaning the litter-box. Need I say more?

Dog or Cat: Both

Essential Electronics: Computer, TV, cell phone, palm pilot (which I pretty much only use to play solitaire)

Gold or Silver: Usually gold, but silver is cheaper. :)

Hometown: Billings, Montana

Insomnia: Not really, but I do stay up too late most nights.

Job Title: Domestic Goddess and Queen of the Universe.

Most admirable trait: I take care of my friends

Number of sexual partners: Two

Overnight hospital stays: Not since infancy - and even then, Mom took me home early

Phobias: Claustrophobic and Hydrophobic (which is funny since I married a surfer!)

Religion: Mormon

Siblings: One sister who watches over me from above and 4 step-sisters who I don't really know

Yummy foods I make: I can't pick just one. Almost everything I make is yummy, and if it's not yummy, I don't make it again.

Questions

Yet another one stolen from my sister 'cause it's fun:

1. What does your blog name mean?
MT - because I'm tried and true Montana girl. Grace is the meaning of my real name. Once upon a time, I worked at a men's store in the mall. Our entire staff was female, and we got hit on all the time. For our own protection, we all had fake names. From that point on, Grace has always been my alter-ego.

2. Elaborate on your default photo?
I adore the hat, and I will eventually buy it. And the model in the picture is beautiful and spunky - and I feel like she fits me.

3. Make up a question.
Why can't I find Porky's 2 on dvd?

4. What's your current relationship status?
Married to the cutest surfer on the planet. And on Saturday, we will have been married exactly 18 months!

5. What EXACTLY are you wearing right now?
White underwear, black yoga pants, black t-shirt, glasses, my wedding ring, Hawaii sandals, and ankle weights (because I haven't taken them off since my workout).

6. What is your current problem?
workout headache

7. What do you love most?
My family, friends and pets

8. What makes you most happy?
cute shoes and when Surfer Pirate willingly watches a whole movie with me

9. Are you musically inclined?
Used to play the piano and violin, but hated practicing (and my music teachers). I sing really well, and eventually want to re-learn how to play the violin.

10. If you could go back in time, and change something, what would you change?
I used to say "nothing" to this question because I feel like even my bad choices have taught me something and shaped who I have become. But I realized one day that I do have one. I wish I had made friends with our neighbor boy who had Downs Syndrome. He was such a sweet kid, but I was afraid of him. I didn't realize how great he was until high school.

11. If you MUST be an animal for ONE day, what would you be?
Easy one - a spoiled house cat (in a home without children). Food and water always available, someone to pet me whenever I allow them to, sleep and eat whenever I feel like it.

12. Ever have a near death experience?
No.

13. Name an obvious quality you have.
I have long hair.

14. What's the name of the song that's stuck in your head right now?
Amazingly, nothing! I do have a rhythm, but it's not tied to any song.

15. Who did you cut and paste this from?

16. Name someone with the same birthday as you.
The ultra-yummy Tony Gonzalez of the Atlanta Falcons (see picture above). We even share the same birth year!

17. Have you ever vandalized someone's private property?
Not unless toilet papering counts

18. Have you ever been in a fight?
Came close one time in junior high, but no.

19. Have you ever sung in front of a large audience?
Karaoke, yes.

20. What is the first thing you notice about the opposite sex?
Smile

21. What do you usually order from Starbucks?
I hate coffee. Usually, I'll get an Italian Soda, but I also will sometimes get a Chai Latte.

22. Has anyone ever said you looked like a celebrity?
My best friend once told me that I look like Scarlett Johansson. That was a very nice compliment, but I don't see it.

23. Do you still watch kiddy movies or TV shows?
Of course. I'm a mom. (And a Disney movie junkie.)

24. Did you have braces?
Nope just a retainer.

25. Are you comfortable with your height?
Pretty much.

26. What is the most romantic thing someone has ever done for you?
Surfer Pirate kissed my belly all the time when I was pregnant.

27. Do you speak any other languages?
I have a semi-decent understanding of Spanish, but I don't speak it anywhere near as well as I would like. One day I plan on buying the Rosetta Stone Spanish program - if only it weren't so darn expensive.

Spring Shoes!

Another topic stolen from my sister's blog:

Just a friendly reminder, it's that time of the year again.

SPRING

Please raise your BIG TOE and repeat after me:

As a member, I pledge to follow The Rules when I wear sandals and other open-toe shoes:

1. I promise to always wear sandals that fit. My toes will not hang over and touch the ground, nor will my heels spill over the backs. And the sides and tops of my feet will not pudge out between the straps.

2. I will go polish-free or vow to keep the polish fresh, intact and chip-free. I will not cheat and just touch up my big toe.

3. I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow.

4. I will shave the hairs off my big toe.

5. I won't wear pantyhose even if my misinformed girlfriend/co-worker/mother/sister tells me the toe seam really will stay under my toes if I tuck it there.

6. If a strap breaks, I won't duct-tape, pin, glue or tuck it back into place hoping it will stay put. I will get my shoe fixed or toss it -- no matter how much it hurts.

7. I will not live in corn denial; rather I will lean on my good friend Dr. Scholl's if my feet need him.

8. I will resist the urge to buy jelly shoes at Payless for the low, low price of $4.99 even if my feet are small enough to fit into the kids' sizes. This is out of concern for my safety, and the safety of others. No one can walk properly when standing in a pool of sweat, and I would hate to take someone down with me as I fall and break my ankle.

9. I will take my toe ring off toward the end of the day if my toes swell and begin to look like Vienna sausages.

10. I will be brutally honest with my girlfriend/sister/co-worker when she asks me if her feet are too ugly to wear sandals. Someone has to tell her that her toes look like they've been dragged behind her car on the way to work and no sandal in the world is going to make her feet look good.

11. I will promise if I wear flip flops, that I will ensure they actually flip and flop, making the correct noise while walking and I will swear NOT to slide or drag my feet while wearing them.

12. I will promise to go to my local beauty school at least once per season and have a real pedicure (they are about $20 and worth EVERY penny).

I say spend another $20.00 and get an even better one.

And finally . . .

13. I will promise to throw away any white/off-white sandals that show signs of wear . . . nothing is tackier than dirty white sandals ...

Updates and Changes

The Update:

We've had our first thunder storm of the season!!!!

It would have been perfect if it hadn't been at 2:00 in the morning. I was too tired to watch it.

It would also have been perfect if I had remembered BEFORE 2:00 in the morning that Pirate Dog is terrified of thunder storms.

I woke up to him barking and talking. My first groggy instinct was that he needed to go outside. So I threw on my bathrobe and was followed by 3 excited dogs - 2 of them excited for an adventure, and 1 of them excited by fear. I realized by the time I got to the front of the house what was happening. We had thunder and lightning. We even had hail! It would have been a magnificent storm if I'd been awake.

Changes:

I've found a blog background that suits me a little more!!

It's even titled Outer Banks! I've actually been to the Outer Banks! My only real experience with the ocean, how sad is that? But it's "piratey", and it makes me happy. And it reminds me of my fun times on Nags Head Beach. And, isn't that a lovely name? :)
